Description Clematis ‘Kokonoe’, which in Japanese means nine circles or layers that overlap, offers deep purple double blooms with stunning, multidimensional structure. The blossoms first emerge looking single but as they mature, the flowers develop a central mound of small petals. A long-bloomer from June to October, this climber makes the perfect patio plant or in the garden trained onto walls, fences, and trellises. Easy to prune, this is a group 3 – cut back stems to just about the ground level each year, if needed. Plant in a well-drained, fertile soil for optimal flowering. ‘Kokonoe’ is less hardy than other Clematis but you can increase hardiness by burying the woody stems six inches deep when planting. Prefers roots to be cool and shaded, so plant low-growing plants around the base, such as Nepeta or Lamium, or add a layer of mulch or compost.
