Description Aster alpigenus, now known scientifically as Oreostemma alpigenum, and commonly called tundra aster or Anderson’s mountain crown, is a semi-evergreen, perennial valued for its lush, somewhat shiny, mid green foliage and elegant lavender to purple flowers with bold yellow centres that bloom in both spring and winter. These colorful blossoms draw bees, beneficial insects, birds, and butterflies, making this alpine aster an excellent choice for pollinator gardens or native plant collections. It thrives in sunny spots with consistent moisture, flourishing in both average and well-drained soils. It is a near-native to BC occurring just across the border in Washington State and will surely be appreciated by our native pollinators. Photo credit: Wikimedia.
