Description Arctostaphylos x densiflora ‘Howard McMinn’, commonly known as manzanita, Spanish for little apple, is a handsome, broad-leafed, evergreen shrub. Leathery, dark green, glossy, elliptical leaves interplay with its striking mahogany bark. Profuse clusters of urn-shaped, pendulous, pinkish-white flowers appear from late winter to spring, followed by edible, brick-red berries in summer that persist well into winter. Rounded growth habit is 4 to 8 feet tall with a 6 to 10 foot spread. Requires acidic soil with good drainage. Adapts well to steep slopes and thrives in unamended native soils and rough conditions. Avoid boggy conditions, heat and rich soils. Stop irrigating after establishment – dislikes wet feet. Exceptionally long-lived. Slow grower. Excellent as a specimen and informal hedge. Hummingbirds and a butterfly attractor.
