Description Andropogon gerardii or big bluestem is a long-lived grass that forms a tall, strictly upright clump of deep green foliage to 5 feet tall. ‘Blackhawks’ is dramatic form that emerges deep green to purple flushed in spring. The foliage colour deepens through the season with deep purple leaf tips by mid to late summer with the leaf blades and stems becoming burgundy-black by late summer and fall. The late season flower plumes are burgundy red. A stunning grass for the perennial border. A Canadian native from Saskatchewan to Quebec.
