Description Amicia zygomeris is a wonderful and peculiar pea-family species from Mexico perfect for those who love foliage and oddball plants. Its upright stems hold green to bluish green, compound leaves comprised of leaflets that look like a cross between a heart and a duckfoot. The leaves fold up at night. At the base of each leaf stem is an ornamental purplish bract-like stipule. In autumn plants will produce clusters of large, lemon yellow, pea-like flowers. Provide consistent moisture. In zone 9, plants are semi-evergreen so could be a year round feature in a greenhouse or sunroom. So far they have proven ground hardy in zone 7b, dying back to their woody base in fall and emerging fresh in spring. Best to mulch the base with a foot of leaves in fall.
