Description Agapanthus praecox spp. orientalis ‘Blue Velvet’ is a cold-hardy lily-of-the-Nile with vibrant cobalt blue flowers. It makes a very handsome specimen with strong, tall stems up to three feet tall dramatically displaying its rounded flower heads with tubular dark blue flowers accented with a darker central stripe and blooming from midsummer to autumn. The foliage is shorter than most and maintains a tidy compact habit before and after blooming. Lily-of-the-Nile are gorgeous, subtropical-looking, long-blooming plants. They thrives in full sun and fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Awesome in the perennial border, grown in swaths, and in containers (where many gardeners find Agapanthus easier to bloom). A great cut flower. Mulch each winter with fallen leaves or protect above freezing in its pot. Hummingbird and bee attractor. Deer resistant.
