Description Ceanothus velutinus is a beautiful white-flowered species related to the California lilacs but known as snowbrush, tobacco brush, or red root. Ceanothus are nitrogen-fixers thanks to symbiotic bacteria that inhabit their root nodules allowing them to tolerate poor soils. Will attract bees and butterflies. The seeds are eaten by birds.
