Description Asarum hartwegii or Hartweg’s wild ginger is a California native with glossy, heart-shaped, silver-mottled, evergreen leaves 2-4 inches wide that grow from spreading, ginger-scented rhizomes. Pitcher-shaped, brownish-maroon coloured flowers emerge on short stems underneath the leaves in late spring to early summer. Plants will grow up to three inches tall and 12 or more inches wide. Best grown in average, neutral to acidic, moist, well-drained soils. Very low maintenance though good drainage is important. Makes for a great ground cover in the shaded, woodland or native garden, as an underplanting for shrubs or for edging beds and pathways. Deer and rabbit resistant. Also known as sierra wild ginger and marbled wild ginger.
