Description Vaccinium vitis-idaea ‘Red Candy’ lets you have your pie and eat it too! This little evergreen shrub is very strong, very compact, and very small reaching just 12 inches tall and wide. But don’t let its size fool you as it produces masses of tasty, tart lingonberries that can be used for jams, pies and other treats. White flowers appear in late spring followed by the red berries that can stay on the shrub over winter. Awesome as a ground cover and in a container for ornamental purposes. The lingonberry is a popular wild harvested fruit in Scandinavia and Newfoundland where they are called partridgeberries. The breeder of this cultivar suggests zone 5 hardiness but this species is hardy to zone 2 so we think ‘Red Candy’ should be just fine in cold climates.
