Vaccinium ‘Northsky’ – Half-Highbush Blueberry – Ericaceae (The Heath Family)

Availability:

$ 8.86

Description Vaccinium ‘Northsky’ is a mid-season, half-highbush blueberry hybrid bred for its dwarf habit and cold-hardiness with all the benefits of a highbush blueberry without the large size. Plants will reach 24-36 inches tall and wide with great cold hardiness to zone 3, ideal for our prairie gardeners! Waxy, bell-shaped white flowers emerge in spring giving way to small, firm, sweet, sky blue berries from July through August. A cross of V. corymbosum and V. angustifolium. Although blueberries are self-fertile, cross-pollination with another variety like ‘Northcountry’ will result in larger berries and larger yield. Can produce from 1-3 pounds of berries per plant. Small, oval shaped green leaves take on attractive fall colours. Blueberry shrubs grow best in well-drained, moisture-retentive, organically rich, acidic soils. Use in the food, rock, woodland or prairie garden and in containers and small spaces. Excellent for jams, jellies, juices and baking. A nectar source for our bees which are the primary source of pollen transfer. Song birds will happily share in the feast of the berries.
